AltaVista Buffalo Farm was carved out of the New England forest on a hill in the town of Rutland in 1724. The first family who bought it named it AltaViata, that means “high view”.The farm was first a dairy farm until 1965. They purchased heifer calves and made a small herd with 5 to 10 animals. Now the farm is totally a buffalo farm.It sells buffalo meat to the public and also sales buffalos .
1.Buffalo meat contains less fat and cholesterol than beef.It has pure wholesome meat in higher protein and iron. They were once in the millions. There were about 75 million in North America. But slaughtered for their hide, tongue and just for sport, they were reduced to less than 1,000 by 1890. They were nearly extinction. But by some ranchers’ foresight, they started their comeback. And now, the national herd numbers around 350,000.
2. The topography of the farm is generally hilly, encompassing numerous flatter wetlands, broad valleys and floodplains.A low percentage (8.2%) of total impervious surfaces — namely, paved areas such as streets, driveways, and parking lots — for this whole subbasin indicates that concerns of compromised stormwater and other non-point sources of contaminants (for example: pesticides, fertilizers, oils, asphalt, pet wastes, salt, sediment, litter and other debris) is not a pressing concern.
3.Wachusset Mountain,Quinapoxet Resevoir, and Pine Hill Resevoir areas have been identified as important core habitat areas. The Pine Hill Resevoir focus area forms the southern extend of a string of open areas stretching north. It is expetional for the extent of undeveloped hillside directly adjacent to large bodies of water. The area around the resevoirs is known to provide exellent snake habitat. Protection priorities include the Bond Hill and the wetland to the west and unprotected interior parcels such as the area around Worcester Brook north of the Pine Hill Resevoir, and Streeter Pond to the west. There are two major surface water supply systems for the city of Worcester which the Quinapoxet Resevoir, Pine Hill Resevoir and Kendall Resevoirs.Indeed, 36% of the Quinapoxet subbasin’s water is diverted into the city of Worcester’s resevoirs and from there to Blackstone River basin.
